Jaeja - or at least I hope to be!

If you follow me on Instagram you may have noticed that I made a pretty fancy purchase. Even the checkout girl at Chapters looked at me wildly and wished me the best of luck with it.

I figured this would motivate me to stay on track with my year so I can get the hell out of here at the end of the year. Now, I know that people speak English in Iceland and I'd have no problems if I didn't learn any of the native tongue. But why would I do that? Half the fun of going to a foreign country is the different languages (although I adore listening to Icelanders speak in english with their super cute accents). I did learn a bit of Finnish before my last trip - and that almost broke me. That was a tough one but, I have some basic Norwegian, and since Icelandic is part of the same Nordic language group I'm hoping that gives me some sort of advantage!

So today is lesson #1. I may already be cowering under the covers from the strangeness of it when this post goes up, but I doubt it. I Got This!

And if I don't, I'll just nail down these three words...

Anyone out there speak Icelandic and want to be my speaking buddy?

It's Summer!

Just Kidding ;) It was still kind of snowing here in Toronto a couple of days ago.

But it's a different story in Iceland. Yeah, I'm actually not even kidding around with you!

You see, in Iceland they celebrate this holiday called Sumardagurinn fyrsti (sorry i can't even begin to help with the pronunciation on this one) which is, according to the old Icelandic calendar, the First Day of Summer.

In April. In fact it is the first Thursday that falls after April 18th. It's one of their 11 flag days AND it's even a public Holiday (yes the first day of summer is a day off of work/school) Kids get gifts, there's a big parade. For the First Day of Summer. That's awesome.

This "old Icelandic calendar" I referred to was brought to the island by it's first settlers back in the 9th Century and it actually split the year into only 2 seasons - summer and winter (works for me!) Because of the long seasons, the first day of a new season was most definitely a reason to celebrate.

Some good news for us all… Old Icelandic folklore states that if the temperature falls below zero (celcius) the night before the first day of summer, then it's going to be a good summer. It fell below zero in both Iceland and right here in Toronto.

You're welcome!

The reason I'm sharing this story…. for one it's hopefully a bit of a pick me up for all my Eastern North Americans who have put up with a lot this past winter (a new friend of mine recently posted a message on facebook that the first person to complain about the heat this summer is getting punched and I'm quite afraid that is going to be me, being that I get all grumpy during the long, hot, humid days of a Toronto summer) and secondly, this is actually when I was supposed to be taking my trip to Iceland. I wanted to take part in this early summer celebration. But that didn't work out, and if I had been on the ball I might have thrown my own Sumardagurinn fyrsti party. I'll still make it to Iceland later this year, and have just as much fun ringing in the New Year.

Happy Summer!

the year that can go away now

that was 2014 for me. Until December rolled in. 2014 was a challenging year. Both professionally and personally. But as I sit here on the first day of 2015 I remember that it's the challenges in life that truly define you. Or should I say, how you overcome those challenges is what defines you. And I feel soooo ready to get 2015 started!

If you follow me on social media (instagram is my personal fav so go follow me now because 2015 is going to be even more fun to watch play out) you'll know I took a step back and hibernated after the One of a Kind show ended. I was completely burnt out and honestly needed to digest everything before I could share it. I'm kind of introverted that way. I don't really like to share personal stuff with people, honestly even with friends (except for those handful of close ones!) And my personal life was suddenly the most interesting part of my day. Well sort of. Lot's of unexpected business stuff was playing out as well but it was all too overwhelming for this little peep.

And since I'm navigating away from Facebook I thought all of this makes for great blog content. And I do need to write more. I feel like a different person going into this year, and I want to share that journey of growth. I learned so much from others this past year, that I want to be able to share my growth with you.

Oh My God. So sappy. Not what some might be used to. But that's the way I'm rollin' these days. I'll do a post more on the challenges that were 2014, but this is New Years Day, a day to celebrate and look forward.

This year the business is moving into some very different directions. Can't tell you all of that now, but here's some fun new things.

I'm not sure if you've noticed but I have a huge green heart. I love the outdoors and yes I'm not afraid to admit I have Tree Hugger tendencies (or if we're talking winter I prefer the term Iceberg Hugger - but we're talkin trees here) I definitely feel out of sorts here in Toronto. It's not that the city doesn't do great things for the environment, but it's definitely not as much of a focus as I am used to, and what I think it should be. So not only am I making the personal pledge to do more (yes you can always do more) but thunderpeep is going green too. Not only that, I'm also pledging to do more to remind the world why the human

As of January 1st I'm switching over from the great FSC papers I've been using to a 100% Post Consumer Waste card stock for cards and any paper products will be printed on a wheat/fibre mix paper (yes I said wheat paper). Envelopes are going to eventually all be the awesome new brown bag envelopes you may have noticed I used for the Holiday cards. 100% recycled and 20% post consumer waste material. I won't be using anymore coloured envelopes. Cards sleeves are a necessary evil but I've found some that are actually certified compostable. What??!!! Yesssssssssss! So excited. All these things are great and I'm so happy with the move, but it will also bring a slight price increase, but that won't come into effect until February 1st. So head over to the online shop and stock up at the old prices ;)

I'm really excited to launch the first new collection of 2015. I'm feeling a lot of love lately. I've been spending a lot of time with some great friends and well, this single lady has a very fun new secret crush, all of which has led to some very fun new lovey cards (you know I don't really like to use that Vday word ). All this love and going green led to the naming of the new collection, The 50 Shades of Green collection. I know right! So Excited. These cards are a bit more sweet than saucy. That's just how I'm feeling these days. And they are the first cards to come out with the whole Tree Hugger treatment. I'm aiming to fully launch them the week of January 5th to give you lot's of time to get some for your special friends.

Lastly, my trip to Iceland has been postponed. But don't be sad, I'm sure not. You're going to be super excited when you hear the travel plans I have instead. And just between us, I'm now aiming to spend next New Years in Iceland so that'll still totally happen.

Oh yeah, I'm also dubbing 2015 as the year of the Trolls.

More to come…. How about you? What are your big plans for 2015?

imagine 3 months off

I wish I was writing to tell you that I was taking off to do whatever my heart desired for 3 months. But I'm only pretending. It's todays Blog Challenge.

If you could take three months off from your current life and do anything in the world, what would you do?

This one is so easy. Because I've been planning it for years. Well taking 6 months or even a year off to go live over in Finland/Norway/Iceland and absorb myself into the Nordic/Scandinavian culture and design. Take some classes at the Design schools, browse the outdoor markets (or indoor if it's wonderful winter) learn how to make my own butter. And Trolls. I want to go on my own Troll Hunting adventure in the woods of Norway. Come on.... who WOULDN'T want to do that?

I'm sort of taking this trip for my 40th birthday (still haven't determined how long the trip will actually be) so who knows... maybe it will be sooner than I think!

Where would YOU go with 3 months off?

new music monday

I'm starting a new trend here on the blog. To share some new music with you every Monday, to help us all get through that first day of the week!

When I was in College I worked for the student newspaper, and in each issue we listed our production playlist. I thought that could work well over here. I can easily get lost in designing for hours on end, so a kick ass soundtrack is absolutely necessary!

For the very first New Music Monday, I'm going to share a band that I'm completely new to from iceland called Sigur Rós. They do sing in Icelandic (which is next on my list once I conquer Norwegian) so I have no idea what the lyrics say, but who cares. You get completely wrapped up in the melody, I'm completely in love with them and I've really only listened to one album.

Enjoy.... :) and if you have any songs/bands that you love to work to let me know. I'm always looking to discover new bands.
